Laozi and Confucius
Laozi and Confucius are said to have met in 518 BC, when the latter was in Luoyang on an educational trip with two students of the princes. Sima Qian reports that at the time of their first meeting Laozi was already an old man when Confucius was young.
The famous philosophers' dispute is said to have taken place in Luoyang. Both philosophers criticised the moral decay in China. While Confucius sought a return to the classical virtues as a way out of the incipient chaos of the "Contested Empires", Laozi focused on the formation of perfect virtue, individual self-contemplation and general philanthropy.
The meeting of the two philosophers is described in various Chinese writings. Daoist interpreters of the meeting had Confucius be so impressed by the figure and wisdom of the "old master" that they compared Laozi to a dragon ascending to heaven on wind and clouds:
"I really saw a dragon this time. When the dragon contracts, it has a physical form - https://domyhomework.club/same-day-essay-writing-service/ ; when it expands, it becomes an aerial form; it travels through the clouds and lives from the light and dark elemental force. I stood speechless with my mouth open. How should I have started to rebuke Lao-Tse?"
Hermitage
Later, Laozi is said to have retired to hermitage and died in his homeland in 517 (according to other opinions in the 6th or 4th century). A famous legend tells how he, dissatisfied with the conditions in China, left the country riding a buffalo and went west. When he stayed overnight at Xiangu Pass, the gatekeeper Guan Yin asked him to write down his ideas. Laozi then wrote down the 5000-character "Dao De Jing". Then he left and was never seen again. His "Striving was to conceal himself and remain without a name", writes Sima Qian.
